Jane is a healing therapist, ceramic artist and teacher. Working with her hands has always been an important means of self-expression. She sees healing and the creative arts as complementary expressions of a similar impulse arising from the urge to restore wholeness and the quest for self-knowledgeAfter teaching Ceramics at Secondary School level for many years, she now works in Foot Therapy, Reiki and Massage. She also has a ceramics studio, called Unearthed Ceramics where she teaches adult and children classes and produces her own work, which she sells through various galleries and exhibitions.

ABOUT JANE
GETTING TO KNOW JANE
Jane was born in Nairobi, Kenya, but she grew up in Johannesburg and attended Hyde Park High. She began a Fine Arts Degree at Wits University which she completed through UNISA. After spending 4 years near Wilderness in the Southern Cape, she came to Grahamstown, where she obtained a teaching diploma in Art and English at Rhodes University. The following year, 1988, she got a teaching job at Carinus Art Centre where she first taught Textile Design for three years. After a year overseas, she returned and taught Ceramics for the next 14 years. During this time she had her two children, now teenagers.Towards the end of the 90s, she felt the need for a change. She wanted to do something that was more spiritually rewarding and felt drawn to some sort of healing work, using her hands. For Jane, massaging her grandmother's feet as a little girl was probably the earliest manifestation of her desire to heal and give comfort. Reflexology seemed the perfect choice and in 1998-9 she did a correspondence course with the International School of Reflexology and Meridian Therapy, Rivonia. She also became interested in Astrology and in 2006, a year after resigning from teaching, obtained a diploma, through the Centre for Alternative Studies, Johannesburg, with Colleen-Joy Page.Subsequently, she did a Reiki course (Three Levels), in 2008 and later, a Crystal Healing course with Pam Scott who runs the School of Holistic Health and Healing for Integrated Body Sciences in Port Elizabeth. In 2006 she set up a Reflexology practice at home, which later expanded to include Reiki and Swedish Massage. In addition, she teaches Ceramic classes in the afternoon and evening to adults and children and, together with a partner, runs the Grahamstown School of Yoga, which has classes twice weekly. She now practises Foot Therapy, which is a gentle form of massage and touch including a healing foot spa. She is currently studying Vedic Astrology (the Indian system) with Richard Fiddler, an Astrologer with over 20 years experience. Astrology is very important to her and she hopes to make it a significant part of her healing practise, as she becomes more experienced.QualificationsB.A.F.A (Hons.) Jane's work is hand-built, using coils or flat slabs. She works with 3 different coloured clays - red, white and black earthenware in marbled areas, contrasting stripes or smaller geometric shapes. Her earlier work was inspired by full-bodied African forms and geometric design. More recent forms are tall, flaring vessels, some of which are sculptural and organic, drawing on rock formations, indigenous African architecture (Mali architecture, for instance) and the female figure. Other creations are more geometric and symmetrical.Making satisfying forms is important to Jane but just as important is creating a lively surface texture with spontaneous drawing, using all kinds of tools to create marks and textures. Similarly she uses different coloured clays as ‘'paint’'. Jane loves the earthy tones of clay and prefers to leave the surface unglazed, so as to preserve the integrity of the clay. Ideally she wants to create the surface of ancient unearthed forms, weathered and marked by time and the elements. Many of these works have been sold, either through exhibitions, or galleries and outlets such as The Square gallery in Port Alfred (now closed) and The Corner in Bathhurst. Enquiries concerning purchases may be made directly to Jane. Sizes in height are approximate. EXHIBITION DATES

HEALING "As a masseuse, foot therapist and specialist in Reiki, Jane brings a calming, soothing energy that balances and heals the spirit. The medium is her hands, but they draw on an energy deep inside Jane that, no matter what is going on in her life, transmits something powerful to those lucky enough to be under her hands." - Anna, Grahamstown. "Foot treatments have helped me in many different ways, I wouldn't miss my monthly appointment for anything." - Rosie, Kenton. "Jane's massage significantly helps to releve tension in my neck and shoulders which permanently have 'rocks' in them. I use pain tablets far less often. It's something I budget for for: an investment for my health." - Annelize, Grahamstown. "Jane James is a multi-skilled therapist with a gentle touch and sincere nature. These attributes, combined with her ambition to understand each individual's problems and needs, enable her to provide a truly holistic treatment." - Clare, Grahamstown. "Reiki has opened up worlds to me that have gently healed and nurtured my life back into balance. With the help of Jane's expertise, her wonderful, caring nature and healing hands, this truly gentle modality has proved to be extremely effective forms of enrichment and inspiration and ultimately, a way of life." - Elaine, Grahamstown. CERAMICS "I love pottery because I like creating the objects and am so excited when they come out of the kiln. I love seeing the colourful glazes in the end." - Gareth, 6, Grahamstown."From a mother's perspective I see my son just loving the exploration of this medium. He has discovered a creative side which he is able to express himself in. Gareth has a fine motor delay and struggles to put pen to paper... we are both totally in awe of what he has produced in his pottery classes this year. Thank you Jane for a happy place in which Gareth loses himself without any pressure!" - Lea, Grahamstown.

Reiki is a Japanese word, made up of two words: rei meaning universal and ki meaning life force. It is a healing technique in which the therapist facilitates the clients access to this universal healing energy. Reiki restores balance to the chakras, removing blockages caused by emotional stress. It is a de-toxifying process which stimulates the bodys natural healing abilityLike Reflexology, Reiki is a holistic therapy which rebalances the physical body, clears the mind, calms the emotions and also connects one to one's spirituality.A Reiki treatment may last an hour or more. The client lies fully dressed while the therapist places her hands on or just above each chakra. Each chakra corresponds to a particular gland and various organs. Energy is channelled into the chakras through the therapists hands. The client may feel tingling or warmth as this energy is processed. Emotional or physical shifts also occur, such as gurgling in the stomach, slight headaches, sadness etc. After a session, the client may feel relaxed or tired and emotional as the energy is processed, but within a day or two, there is increased energy, feeling of well- being, optimism or of being able to cope more effectively.
This treatment restores a sense of well-being and relaxation. Foot Therapy can:•reduce stress and induce deep relaxation•revitalize energy•restore emotional well-being•alleviate aches and painTouch is a special part of the healing process.
